Brake Safety Week 2026: What Every Carrier Needs to Know

Brake Safety Week 2026 is officially scheduled for August 23–29, 2026, as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Operation Airbrake program, and it’s something every fleet and owner-operator should be preparing for now.

What is Brake Safety week?

Brake Safety Week is a nationwide enforcement initiative where inspectors conduct in-depth brake system inspections on commercial motor vehicles, including large trucks and buses. The goal is simple: identify violations and immediately remove unsafe vehicles from the road.

Alongside this scheduled week, CVSA also continues its unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement events, meaning inspections can happen anytime, without warning.

Why this matters for large fleets?

Brake-related violations consistently rank as the #1 cause of out-of-service orders during roadside inspections. And the risks are real. A commercial vehicle traveling at 65 mph can take the length of two football fields to come to a complete stop, even with properly functioning brakes. Now imagine that same truck with faulty brake components.

What inspectors are looking for

During Brake Safety Week, inspectors will focus on critical components like:

  • Brake linings and pads
  • Air brake systems
  • Brake hoses and tubing
  • ABS warning lights
  • Overall brake system functionality

Even a minor issue can escalate into an out-of-service violation, costing you time, money, and potentially your reputation.

How to prepare your fleet

This isn’t something to leave for the last minute. Smart carriers are already:

  • Performing preventive maintenance checks
  • Training drivers to spot early warning signs
  • Keeping inspection records up to date
  • Addressing small issues before they become costly problems

TRU Funding’s message to carriers

At TRU Funding, we work with carriers every day, and we know that downtime is expensive. But safety violations? Even more so.

This is why we’re reminding our partners:

Keeping your brake systems in top condition isn’t just about compliance, it’s about protecting your drivers, your business, and everyone on the road.

Because at the end of the day, safety isn’t just a regulation.

It’s a responsibility.
